Pasantía en medicina interna con enfoque en oncología en The Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital de la Universidad de Cambridge

Abstract

Las neoplasias son una de las principales causas de muerte en mascotas, razón por la cual su estudio, es decir, la oncología es trascendental en la formación del médico veterinario. Se realizó una pasantía en The Queen's Veterinary School Hospital, institución perteneciente a la Universidad de Cambridge, Inglaterra. Se rotó por las unidades de medicina interna, diagnóstico por imágenes, cirugía y se dio especial énfasis a la unidad de oncología. En este servicio se participó en el abordaje general del paciente, diagnóstico, diferentes modalidades terapéuticas y seguimiento de los casos. El presente trabajo es de carácter descriptivo al tratarse de un análisis del funcionamiento de cada unidad y especialmente del proceso de estadificación, tratamiento y seguimiento del paciente oncológico. Adicionalmente, se presentarán dos casos de interés que serán desarrollados completamente con su respectiva descripción, abordaje, tratamiento y discusión. Durante esta pasantía se adquirió experiencia sobre diferentes terapias oncológicas y el manejo de pacientes críticos. Además, se enriquecieron los conocimientos sobre las ventajas y desventajas de diferentes modalidades de imagenología y sobre un sistema artificial para manejo de incontinencia urinaria.

Cancer is one of the main causes of death in companion animals, making it an essential part of a veterinarian's education. The student did an externship in The Queen's Veterinary School Hospital at the University of Cambridge, England. She rotated through the following services: surgery, diagnostic imaging and internal medicine with an emphasis in oncology. It was in this last service that she participated in the initial evaluation of the patient, its diagnosis, its treatment and follow up. This document explains in detail how each service works, how the staging process is and how the treatment decision is done in the oncology unit. During this externship the student adquired knowledge in different cancer treatments and in the management of critical patients. Besides she learned about the advantages and disadvantages of different types of imaging and about an artificial system for the treatment of urinary incontinence
