Fair trade as a commercial alternative has become an important market driver that has allowed, according to the research of other authors, to lay the foundations for harmonizing social and environmental variables within the economic perspective of trade. In developed countries, fair trade has significant growth rates on the part of consumers, which has been due to the intense marketing campaigns that have been deployed in order to strengthen and publicize this trading system. On the contrary, in developing countries - the suppliers of fair trade products - this type of trade is hardly known, both at the academic, business and governmental levels. This report is a research on fair trade and its relationship with competitive advantage and sustainable development, using the Association of Small Producers of Talamanca (APPTA) for its analysis. The work is structured in six chapters, which respectively include topics such as: methodological aspects, fair trade theory, certification process, international market behavior, diagnosis and proposal for APPTA, to end with the general conclusions of the seminar. In the development of the study, the organization, its administrative structure, compliance with fair trade standards, as well as the living conditions of the associated producers were analyzed; aspects that facilitated the researchers to establish conclusive truths regarding the relationship between competitive advantage and sustainable development with fair trade.
