The growing private and public regulations to the productive processes with increasingly strong requirements to participate in the markets have led small and medium producers to face numerous crossroads fulfilling these requirements. This article investigates whether the application of environmental certifications has meant an improvement in the competitiveness of small and medium agricultural producers. To this end, an analysis is made of the certification environment in Costa Rica, both internationally and institutionally, and an approach is made to the realities of the experiences of small producer organizations based on the results of a survey carried out in 2015. The article concludes that the certification strategy has allowed a better positioning and, therefore, stability in the value chain, although for organizations and policy-makers there are areas where to improve, such as costs and process changes and cultural resistance to this type of initiative
