Whoever comes into contact with the historical bibliography of Costa Rica will find frequent references to the war with the filibusters in 1856-1857 and the precipitous withdrawal of the Costa Rican troops from the city of Rivas, when cholera broke out. This epidemic has been described as the worst suffered by the country in its history, but all mentions are brief, except for one or two studies that dedicate a few more pages to it. The strange thing is that no historian felt the concern to deepen the analysis of a phenomenon of such intense catastrophic characteristics, comparable to the volcanic phenomena so common in Central America.
