Since 2012, the National University of Costa Rica began working on the Institutional Environmental Management Program PGAI-UNA, established by Executive Decree No. 36499-S-MINAET, regulation for the development of institutional environmental management programs in the public sector of Costa Rica. Currently, the most rational use of resources (water, electricity, fossil fuel, wastewater, among others) is being worked on by faculty, center, instance or regional campus, as well as carrying out an adequate management of its waste and emissions, seeking to minimize the environmental impacts that are generated in the institutional work. With this, environmental control is achieved through the generation of reliable, verifiable and accessible indicators that allow the determination of the environmental behavior of the UNA and the degree of progress of the strategies and actions previously established as planning environmental reduction goals with their respective socialization, savings campaigns, awareness through environmental education, as well as effectiveness in change and new implementation of efficient technologies for saving and managing resources.
