As a product of the development of the paper industry, the impacts on the environment have also increased. In some cases these impacts are reversible in the short term, but in others the effects they cause on the natural balance persist for many years. In order to minimize this problem, treatment systems for atmospheric emissions, solid waste and residual water have emerged. In the case of paper sludge generated in the wastewater treatment system, there are different alternatives for its use worldwide. The production of organic fertilizer through the compost technique, generation of caloric energy, use as cover material in a sanitary landfill and production of stucco for the paint industry, are four alternative uses analyzed for primary sludge from the system. of treatment of residual waters of the company Scott Paper Company of Costa Rica. Based on the physicochemical characteristics of the primary sludge and the alternative in which it would be used, as well as the environmental assessment carried out through the MET matrix, the composting option was selected as the alternative that presented the greatest technical possibility of execution. Since in terms of environmental impacts these would be smaller and easier to control than those emitted during the process of generating heat energy.
