The purpose of this paper is to present a preliminary analysis of the education of the Costa Rican population, as observed from the 2000 census data. Education is studied from two distinct perspectives: first, as the main component of the stock of human capital available in the country; and second, as a factor of social mobility. Some comparisons are also made with the results of the 1973 and 1984 censuses. It should be clear from the outset that this is a preliminary work. Everything presented here requires further, more precise, and detailed analysis, including the spatial disaggregation of some results. However, I am encouraged to present it because what is observed seems sufficiently solid and interesting. An important part of the previous work with the census data, which is not presented here, involved analyses of the consistency and validity of the results being obtained. In this respect, the census information passed the various tests and comparisons to which it was subjected. All the data presented in this work were obtained by processing the census data from 2000, 1984, and 1973, using the PDQ Explorer system available online on the server of the Central American Population Center at the University of Costa Rica.
