Resumen
La agricultura representa uno de los sectores más importantes en las economías de los
países de las Américas, sobre todo en América Latina y el Caribe. Considerando que las
actividades agropecuarias son el pilar para garantizar la seguridad alimentaria, y que el
contexto político y económico del comercio agrícola mundial es complejo, resulta
fundamental que los países productores de bienes agropecuarios, especialmente los
miembros del Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA),
conozcan y sepan cómo implementar las normas y compromisos derivados de las
decisiones relativas a la agricultura, en el marco de la Organización Mundial del Comercio
(OMC).
La política y la institucionalidad agrícola en el ámbito multilateral de la OMC,
regional y nacional figura como un componente fundamental para la cooperación técnica
que brinda el IICA, en miras de alcanzar el desarrollo agrícola y bienestar rural de las
Américas. Por tal motivo, la presente práctica pretendió facilitarles a los países el acceso a
la información sobre los principales resultados relativos a la agricultura de la última
Conferencia Ministerial de la OMC, su relación con el Acuerdo sobre Agricultura y
posibilitar un espacio de reflexión sobre cuáles serían las principales implicaciones para el
diseño e implementación de sus políticas comerciales agrícolas.
