Introduction Conversation circles for family meetings serve as a support tool for addressing the initial stage of families in crisis, when they discover that their son, daughter, child, or other close family member is an LGBTIQ+ person—that is, someone with a sexual orientation or gender identity that differs from heteronormativity, and gender identities or expressions that differ from cisgender and binary norms. This resource also reflects an effort to eliminate all forms of violence and exclusion, particularly the exclusion of people based on their non-heterosexual sexual orientation and of transgender, non-binary, gender-fluid, or queer individuals. Through the themes of each gathering, we aim to enable individuals and families to discuss and share their experiences—both of hardship and of liberation—so that the necessary strengths and resilience may emerge. In this way, shared learning becomes local and contextual pedagogy, and will make an invaluable contribution to the effort to (re)write educational experiences and practices from the perspective of Latin American concerns and contexts. Furthermore, the conversations proposed for each gathering may contribute to the revival of the various spiritualities that fuel resistance and, consequently, to the (re)discovery of a mysticism that enriches daily life and strengthens attitudes of love, respect, and admiration toward diverse forms of otherness. The idea of creating these conversation circles arose from an exploration of the history of experiences, feelings, and forms of resistance faced by mothers of LGBTIQ+ individuals, as well as by various families participating in the Support Group for Family Members and Friends of Sexual Diversity (GAFADIS), such as: the loss of expectations, suffering, fear, sadness, guilt, disappointment, and despair. Over time, these families managed to transform these experiences into lessons and a spirit of resilience, which are expressed through evolved love, respect for the being and knowledge of the LGBTIQ+ person, growth, joy, courage, acceptance, respect, and hope. Given the richness of these personal and family experiences, and the joy of being freed from moral, cultural, and religious prejudices, the mothers participating in GA FADIS decided to share their experiences and offer support materials to help other families, communities, and organizations seeking ways to overcome educational, cultural, and religious violence in various situations. The conversation circles thus bring together lessons, spiritualities, and forms of resistance that can help individuals, families, and communities learn to embrace and respect the diversities that define us as human beings, as families, and as communities. The proposed topics and activities for each meeting aim to contribute to the creation of collective moments and spaces for conversation, sharing, and mutual support on the path toward acceptance and unconditional respect for diverse forms of otherness. The activities and exercises can be adapted to the specific needs of different groups and locations. Our hope is that this material will help promote learning, renew spiritualities, and strengthen resilience beyond GAFADIS and, perhaps, beyond the territorial borders of Costa Rica.
