| dc.description.abstract | This research reconstructs the Confraternity of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Nicoya as a historical form of community organization, analyzing the factors that have made its establishment and continuity possible from the 16th century to the present. Using a dialectical and historical-structural approach, the research articulates three fundamental categories: ethnic order, social honor system, and ethnic consciousness, understood as constitutive structures of the community's historical reproduction. The analysis of the period 1524–1804 shows that the confraternities, originally established by the colonial order, were progressively appropriated by the indigenous peoples of Nicoya until they became spaces for community organization. Racial, linguistic, and religious conflicts fostered the emergence, around 1644, of the first stirrings of ethnic consciousness of the "Indian as Indian," articulated around devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The research develops a system of 64 analytical categories that allows for the reconstruction of the internal logic of the confraternity community and demonstrates that its historical continuity rests on the tension between two originating structures, termed the Theology of the Father and the Theology of the Mother. While the former organizes the mechanisms of domination and legitimation, the latter sustains the reproduction of community life. The study concludes by proposing the concept of the Guadalupana confraternity community of ethnic affirmation to explain the historical permanence of this collective actor and its capacity to reproduce social recognition, belonging, and community continuity within Nicoya society. | |
