The availability of energy represents a key factor for development and growth economic. The services provided by energy are decisive for the improvement and continuity of the quality of life of the inhabitants of a nation. The direct relationship between energy use and economic development is also evidenced when the scarcity of energy sources negatively affect development. Access to energy contributes to well-being and progress through the benefits of lighting, heat, refrigeration, cooking, communication, domestic uses, among others. In rural and remote areas, the use of renewable energy sources, will allow the creation of new industries, education, employment generation, and others, with which that will improve living conditions, reducing migration to urban areas. This means that access to energy should be considered a strategic point on the agendas development of underdeveloped countries. In this sense, the article addresses the problems faced by rural areas that do not have commercial electricity to meet their basic needs such as cooking and lighting, which limits their possibilities for development, health and education. Therefore, the first part of the article is dedicated to a theoretical discussion of the problem of access to energy.
