A retrospective study was made in the archives of the Pathology Laboratory of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the National University covering the period from 1976 to 1992, which showed histopathological evidence of the existence of myxomatosis in Costa Rica since 1977; however, in an extensive bibliographic review, no scientific publications on this disease were found in the country. For the execution of this research, a prospective study was carried out using 5 rabbits suspected of suffering myxomatosis. These animals were submitted to an anatomical and histopathological study, and viral isolation in cell cultures was attempted from their tissues. We also studied histopathologically the preserved tissues of the cases diagnosed as myxomatosis found in the retrospective study. The histopathological alterations found in the archival cases are very similar to those found in the 5 cases of the prospective study, and both the macro and microscopic lesions found broadly coincide with those cited in the literature for myxomatosis. Of the 5 cases in the prospective study, viral isolation was attempted in 4, 3 of which showed a cytopathic effect in cell cultures. In the supernatant of these cultures, the myxomatosis virus was determined and photographed by transmission electron microscopy. The findings of the present research allowed, in turn, to establish for the first time in the country the etiological diagnosis of the disease.
