The extraction of materials, such as sand and gravel in deposits or river beds, generates special problems due to the area where it is practiced, the Tempisque River basin, and the excessive magnitude with which these extractive activities are carried out. Environmental vulnerability, together with the lack of current legislation, makes this issue a local concern due to the irrational way in which extraction zones are being exploited. In view of this, an evaluation of the current conditions of the extractive zones and their potential to generate basic information to serve as technical foundations for future geomorphological studies of scientific and political interest is developed.
