A nine-week internship, between November 2021 and February 2022, took place at Albéitar Veterinary-Diagnostic Clinical Laboratory, in its main facilities located in Sabana, San José, Costa Rica. The main purpose was to develop skills in handling, processing, and interpreting biological samples. During the internship, samples from the four main areas of expertise in the laboratory were analyzed, worked as follows: two weeks in hematology, two weeks in the parasitology/urinalysis area, three weeks in clinical biochemistry, and two weeks in microbiology. A total of 1060 samples were submitted by different veterinarians from different regions in the country. The most part of these were canine and feline samples (84% and 14%, respectively), however, samples from other species were received, such as horses, primates, raccoons, hamsters, and rabbits. The blood chemistry area had the highest number of samples, with a total of 409, including biochemical profiles and individual analytes. In hematology, a total of 254 samples were analyzed, being the blood counts the most common test performed. In parasitology/urinalysis, a total of 209 samples were examined. The most frequent tests were complete urinalysis and stool examination. At last, in microbiology, a total of 188 samples were analyzed, most of these were bacterial and mycological cultures, KOH tests, and Gram stains. xii Additionally, a detailed description of the results found in different tests and a critical analysis of the importance of laboratory tests as a diagnostic tool in public health was carried out, with a thorough bibliographic search about the concerning topics. This internship was an opportunity for professional growth given the high number of cases that are handled daily, the diversity of tests that are offered, and the available equipment; this strengthened my education as a veterinarian.
