Veterinaria Hatillo S.A.
An eight-week internship was carried out at the Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres (HEMS), located in the Ulloa district, Heredia, and Veterinaria Hatillo S.A. (VEHASA) veterinary hospital, located in the Hatillo district of San José, both hospitals are reference centers in Costa Rica with numerous referred patients, being the main objective of the internship to develop skills in internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and surgery of small species. During this time, the intern was involved in the care of 149, 19 feline and 130 canine patients. Consultations for gastrointestinal problems were the most common complains in both hospitals, but many orthopedic and reproductive patients were also seen. Regarding diagnostic imaging tests, 69 of them were performed in both hospitals, including ultrasounds, radiographs, and endoscopies. The abdominal ultrasound was the most performed test at both hospitals, with a prevalence of 40.5% (28) at the HEMS and 43.4% (20) at VEHASA. The intern participated in a total of 74 surgeries and was involved in different surgical stages, most of the surgeries were performed in the integumentary and musculoskeletal systems in the HEMS and the reproductive system in VEHASA. A particular case report about a female canine is discussed. The patient was referred with a diagnosis of cholangiohepatitis. She underwent surgery of cholecystoduodenostomy, a description of the treatment performed, the surgical procedure, the evolution, and some other aspects are discussed.
