Hablo, luego existo. La traducción del lenguaje marcado en «The Artful Touch», de Charles Dickens

Abstract

This article addresses the translation of dialect in literary texts. It is based on three premises: 1. The language of narrators and characters is relevant both for their characterization and for the construction of the context in which the action takes place; 2. there is no unique way to translate dialect; and 3. the different ways of doing it depend on the circumstances in which the translation is generated. The translation of marked language in “The Artful Touch,” a flash-fiction story by Charles Dickens, is addressed from three different approaches: neutralization, homologation and (social) compensation. The resulting translations may be deemed appropriate depending on the situation

En este artículo se aborda la traducción del lenguaje marcado en los textos literarios, a partir de tres premisas: 1. el lenguaje de narradores y personajes es significativo tanto para su caracterización como para la construcción del contexto en que transcurre la acción; 2. no hay una única manera de traducir el lenguaje marcado; 3. las diferentes formas de hacerlo responden a las circunstancias en que se produce la traducción. Se desarrollan tres enfoques —neutralización, homologación y compensación (social)— mediante las cuales se aborda la traducción del lenguaje marcado en el microrrelato «The Artful Touch», de Charles Dickens. Sendas traducciones resultan adecuadas según la situación.
