The Social Sciences Documentary Information Center (CIDCSO) was defined as the unit in charge of housing information relevant to the Social Sciences, to support research and offer a service in accordance with the current and future needs of the academic work of the National University (UNA), since it stores 44,600 printed information resources (RII) in its bibliographic collection. Currently, the CIDCSO has a total of five collections, the documents are stored on shelves, where there are different causes that contribute to generate deterioration in these. Due to the above mentioned, there is a need to develop a proposal for CIDCSO's RII to have the necessary guidelines for their conservation. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the importance of guaranteeing the useful life of the RII for a longer period of time, through actions that help to prolong their protection and that can be used to generate new knowledge and local, national and international research, in order to favor university activities. In addition, it seeks to encourage CIDCSO officials about the benefits that printed documentation can have if the criteria proposed are applied, according to previous knowledge related to conservation. The objectives that constitute this research are the following: number one is to diagnose the current situation of the Documentary Information Center of Social Sciences of the National University, Costa Rica, in terms of infrastructure, storage and maintenance of printed information resources, for which we proceeded to know how the CIDCSO is currently based on storage, infrastructure and maintenance. The second objective is to identify the causes that generate deterioration to the printed information resources of the Documentary Information Center of Social Sciences of the National University, Costa Rica, according to the knowledge about the bad actions that are carried out in storage, infrastructure and maintenance, in order to correct them through guidelines for the conservation of printed information resources that are defined based on the results obtained. This research presents a mixed approach, the types of research used were descriptive and projective. The subjects surveyed were the following: four professionals in librarianship, four assistant students and one miscellaneous, all from CIDCSO; the sources of information used were: the printed information resources and facilities of CIDCSO, documents, manuals, policies, guidelines, directives, etc., on conservation created in national and international libraries, guidelines and directives from ISO, NBE, UNESCO, IFLA and different authors specialized in the subject. Finally, the techniques used for data collection were interview, observation and content analysis. The results obtained are as follows: with respect to the current situation, it is indicated that the way in which the collections are stored is not adequate and the shelves are not suitable for storing them, the infrastructure of CIDCSO has fungus on the internal walls-left where the mobile shelves are located and in certain parts of the floor under the natural plants, the windows are permanently closed and there is no air conditioning, nor security systems on doors and windows, the miscellany considers that the cleaning process it uses is adequate. Regarding the causes of deterioration, the IIR are stacked on top of each other on the shelves due to lack of space, the shelves are made of wood and have rodents and insects such as termites, cockroaches, spiders, mice, ants, and flies, the IIR have stains, cracks, unbinding, corrosion, acidity, and oxidation due to metal elements such as paper clips, presses, and staples, and they also use adhesives, highlighters, and pens. The CIDCSO does not have its own conservation guidelines and does not consult those created by national and international institutions, the staff does not carry out the restoration of RII and is not trained on how to conserve correctly, as they ignore the causes and their deterioration. Likewise, they do not provide guidance to the user population on how to care for damaged printed material and the consequences of its complete deterioration. The CIDCSO does not provide the miscellaneous with a guide on how to clean the RII, shelves and infrastructure in general. Among the conclusions, the important role played by the CIDCSO within the UNA stands out, because it serves as a documentary depository, stores a large part of the publications produced in the different departments and related to the topics, as well as some copies produced at the national and international level. Mice nests and excrement can be observed in the collections, specifically in the special storage boxes; cockroaches, spiders and ants are also present in the natural plants displayed on the shelves and food residues are deposited in the trash cans. The physical space is not adequate for the storage of the collections, because the infrastructure is small for the large amount of documents processed, which means that the shelves are very close to each other. Professional fumigation services are not contracted, since some shelves are rarely consulted and rodents take advantage of the tranquility and dirt to nest, since the staff does not constantly check the shelves for anomalies in their order and cleanliness. The recommendations emphasize the following actions: the importance of expanding CIDCSO's infrastructure in order to acquire a large number of metal shelves to help store the documents that are stacked and at the same time replace the wooden shelves, in order to free up space and keep the entire bibliographic collection in the same physical space. It is recommended that the necessary equipment be acquired to help control or minimize chaos in the event of a disaster, in order to safeguard the IIR in the best possible way. In addition, it is recommended that a plan of action in case of natural and human emergencies be prepared in digital and printed format for staff and users.es_ES
