Abstract
The apparent digestibility coefficients of protein, usable carbohydrates and dry matter of four commercial diets (two with vitamins: D30V, D35V and two without vitamins: D30, D35) were determined in adult tilapia (O. niloticus) of 200-300g by means of two methods of collecting feces, using chromium oxide as an indicator: 1- sedimentation, 2- suction. The first method was carried out in a digestibility unit with stool collections between 1 and 4 hours and the second method was carried out in aquariums, with suction of stool in a time no longer than 2 minutes after defecation. The sedimentation method yielded higher digestibility values for protein and usable carbohydrates than the suction method, probably due to a greater loss of nutrients and suspended solids as a result of a longer exposure time of the feces in the water. The commercial diets D30 and D35 presented the best usable carbohydrate digestibility values (79.28% and 81.47% respectively) (P <0.05). The D35 diet also presented the highest dry matter digestibility (68.58) (P <0.05). The highest protein digestibility was obtained with diet D35 (90.31) and the lowest value for diet D30 (87.44), but the differences were not significant. In general, the high protein digestibility values suggest that both the inputs of plant and animal origin used for the preparation of the four commercial diets were well assimilated by O. niloticus. Finally, it was found that the digestibility of usable carbohydrates and dry matter decreased when vitamins were included in the diet.
