Pasantía en el Servicio de Medicina Zoológica del Hospital Veterinario de Docencia de Louisiana State University, Estados Unidos

Resumen
Se presentan los resultados de una pasantía de 320 horas realizada en el Servicio de
Medicina Zoológica del Hospital Veterinario de Docencia de Louisiana State University del 6
de mayo al 8 de julio de 2019. Durante este periodo, se participó en la atención de 250 casos,
de los cuales 177 fueron casos de animales silvestres (71%), 61 de mascotas exóticas (24%) y
12 de animales de centros de manejo de fauna silvestre (5%). Los pacientes correspondieron a
130 aves (52%), 95 mamíferos (38%) y 25 reptiles (10%). Se atendieron 85 pacientes
huérfanos y se participó en 13 cirugías.
Se participó en los exámenes físicos, sujeciones físicas y químicas y en la
interpretación de exámenes complementarios de diferentes especies de las tres clases, lo cual
es descrito en el presente documento. Además, se describe el lugar de trabajo, la casuística de
la pasantía y el caso de una paciente tortuga jeroglífica (Pseudemys concinna) silvestre que
sufrió dos fracturas en su caparazón, las cuales fueron reparadas
Results from an intership at the Zoological Medicine Service from Louisiana State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital during the period between May 6th to July 8th, 2019 are presented. During that period 244 cases were attended of which 177 were wildlife (71%), 61 were exotic pets (24%) and 12 wild animals in zoos and private collections (5%). The patients attended were 130 birds (52%), 95 mammals (38%) and 25 reptiles (10%). Physical exams, physical and chemical restrictions and complementary tests were practiced in different species from the three animal classes mentioned, which are described in the document. Additionally, there can be found a description of the place, statistics of the cases attended and a case from a wild River cooter turtle (Pseudemys concinna) that suffered a fracture in its shell, which was repaired.
