This externship took place in the Small Animal Surgery Service of the Ontario Veterinary College Teaching Hospital, located in the city of Guelph, Ontario, Canada; between March 7th and April 4th, 2011. During the 4-week externship, a total of 60 patients were treated: 51 dogs, 8 cats and 1 swan. Forty six of them underwent soft tissue surgeries, and 14 orthopedic surgeries. Additionally, two particular cases are discussed due to its complexity, innovative nature, applicability in the workplace of Costa Rica, and the differences in the techniques used between the two countries. These are: (1) the placement of a bipolar, epicardial pacemaker in a cat with a third grade atrio-ventricular heart block, and (2) a laparoscopic prophylactic incisional gastropexy and ovariectomy in a dog
