The Moín coral reefs, located on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, are exposed to various anthropogenic activities, including urban development, commercial and industrial activities, and the presence of major commercial ports and the country's only oil port. The objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of total mercury (THg) in sediments, macroalgae (Cryptonemia crenulata), and sponges (Cinachyrella kuekenthali) collected between October 2014 and May 2016 in Moín and at a reference site in the southern Caribbean (SC). The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of THg was also calculated in both organisms to assess its accumulation. THg concentrations were compared with previous studies, Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQG), and the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo) in order to assess sediment contamination and potential ecotoxicological effects. THg concentrations in macroalgae were similar between Moín and the reference site, with an approximate value of 28 ng g⁻¹ dry weight (dwt). Sponges showed the highest accumulation of THg among all samples, with concentrations ranging from 100 to 192 ng g⁻¹ dwt in Moín and from 85 to 211 ng g⁻¹ dwt at the reference site. Sediment samples from Moín showed THg concentrations similar to those observed in macroalgae. In general, THg concentrations in sediments were below the values established by the SQG, and Igeo indicated that sediments from both Moín and the reference site were not contaminated.
