Abstract. The quality of surface water is a set of indicators, usually physical and chemical, however, an ecosystemic and comprehensive approach includes micro and macrobiological indicators. Quality modeling for surface waters is important since it allows us to understand the dynamics and projections of environmental degradation of these ecosystems; In Costa Rica, few studies have used this emerging tool in IWRM processes. The Virilla River receives the discharge of wastewater from various productive activities. The objective of the study is to generate a baseline in relation to the quality of the Virilla River and in parallel to use the data generated in the implementation of a quality model.
