The recent debate on rurality has consolidated the idea that rurality is not equivalent to agriculture: the productive profile of these areas has increasingly included tourism and services. This corresponds to a characteristic process of development in which agriculture tends to lose participation, both in production and in employment. In 2022, it suffered a contraction of 23.2%, representing 4% of GDP. This contraction of agriculture has to do with various structural and circumstantial factors, such as the growing opportunity cost of agriculture compared to other options; increasingly evident climate change and variability, which changes the natural conditions for agricultural production, forcing adaptation processes, to which we can add the periods of drought last year and this year; as well as the increase in the cost of inputs due to the cost of transportation associated with the invasion of Ukraine.
