In recent years, the phrase “blue zone” has been coined to refer to places in the world where people keep active until an advanced age. Research on this topic deals with the necessity to deepen the knowledge on the social factors that contribute to prolong the life in conditions of physical and mental health, and the analysis of tourism as an ideal social space to stimulate social interaction. The research is developed through a study of bibliographic sources, official statistics, field research, interviews to elderly people and their families, interviews to health staff, and members of the elderly people attention committees. This case study takes place in the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica, which, besides being a tourism destination, has the largest elderly population in Costa Rica and has been labelled as blue zone. Costa Rica is a promoter of human rights and keeps, in the national health policy, a variety of principles associated to equity, universality, solidarity, ethics and social inclusion, among others.
