Resumen
La toxoplasmosis es ocasionada por el parásito Toxoplasma gondii. Este es un coccidio intracelular obligado, que tiene como hospedadores definitivos a los felinos y como hospedadores intermediarios a especies no felinas, incluido el ser humano. La infección se puede dar por vía oral, transplacentaria o transmamaria. En animales sintomáticos es común encontrar fiebre, inflamación ocular, ataxia, convulsiones, dolor muscular o disnea, sin embargo los síntomas son variables según el sitio anatómico donde se este resentando la infección. En los se felinos da un ciclo intestinal y puede ocurrir un ciclo extraintestinal, lo cual depende de factores de virulencia del parásito y de la respuesta inmune del hospedador.
Toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. This is an obligate intracellular coccidian, which has felines as definitive hosts and non-cat species, including humans, as intermediate hosts. Infection can occur orally, transplacental or transmammary. In symptomatic animals it is common to find fever, ocular inflammation, ataxia, convulsions, muscle pain or dyspnea, however the symptoms are variable depending on the anatomical site where the infection is occurring. In felines there is an intestinal cycle and an extraintestinal cycle may occur, which depends on parasite virulence factors and host immune response.
