Resumen
La gran demanda de tierras cultivables y de productos forestales, aunada a la urbanización creciente, ha dado lugar a una acelerada deforestación de los bosques naturales, lo que ha llevado a la disminución de individuos que en muchos casos eran catalogados como excelentes árboles reproductores. Consecuentemente, el agotamiento de los bosques ha generado la necesidad de establecer plantaciones forestales para satisfacer la demanda de madera y promover la protección del ambiente. Sin embargo, la gran variabilidad en la calidad de las plantaciones forestales ha obligado a incorporar el mejoramiento genético y la biotecnología forestal como herramientas para lograr los objetivos de producción (Wadsworth, 2000).
The high demand for arable land and forest products, coupled with increasing urbanization has resulted in accelerated deforestation of natural forests, leading to the decline of individuals that in many cases were considered excellent reproductive trees. Consequently, the depletion of forests has generated the need to establish forest plantations to meet the demand for timber and promote environmental protection. However, the great variability in the quality of forest plantations has made it necessary to incorporate genetic improvement and forest biotechnology as tools to achieve production objectives. (Wadsworth, 2000).
