In August 1989, the preliminary review of the "National Diagnosis of the Micro and Small Enterprise Sector in Costa Rica" was completed. This research has been carried out and satisfactorily executed by the Institute of Social Studies in Population (IDESPO) of the National University, the General Directorate of Small Industry and Handicrafts (DAGPTIA) of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce and the National Directorate of Employment (DNE) of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, with the financial support of the International Development Research Center (IDRC) of Canada and the Costa Rican Association for Development Organizations (ACORDE). The National Diagnostic was presented in its preliminary version in two volumes, Volume I: Approaches and Results, which shows the methodological and conceptual aspects of the study, as well as the selective analysis of some of the variables, both of the micro and small entrepreneurs, as well as of the support institutions and finally, an extensive statistical and methodological annex, which complements the previous information. Finally, Volume II: Instruments and Base Information, which presents the operational elements used (manual questionnaires), as well as the documentation of the base information and the respective base information. Given the volume and scope of the preliminary version of this Diagnosis (Volume I and II), as well as the need to expand and disseminate among interested entities the main results of this study, we present on this occasion a summary of the main findings and methodological and analytical conclusions that are expanded and commented on in the National Diagnosis of the MSE, mainly with regard to Volume I: Approaches and Results. This summary was prepared by Mr. Hugo Gonzalez Calvo of IDESPO, with the purpose of being presented at the Seminar "National Diagnosis of Micro and Small Enterprises in Costa Rica", to be held in October 1989 with sponsoring institutions linked to the sector.
