An in vivo model to study the anti-malaric capacity of plant extracts

Abstract

An in vivo model to study the antimalaric effect of plant extracts is described. White mice (25-30g body weight) are treated subcutaneously with 0.6ml of the diluted extract starting seven days before P. berghei infection; treatment continues until death or for 30 days. Simultaneously 0.2ml of the extract are applied per os starting three days before infection. In a test of the model, treated and non-treated animals differed in body weight, survival time, haematocrite, parasitemia development, and spleen or liver weight of recent dead or killed mice.

Se describe un modelo in vivo para estudiar el efecto antipalúdico de extractos de plantas. Se tratan ratones blancos (25-30 g de peso corporal) por vía subcutánea con 0,6 ml del extracto diluido comenzando siete días antes de la infección por P. berghei; el tratamiento continúa hasta la muerte o durante 30 días. Simultáneamente se aplican 0,2ml del extracto por vía oral comenzando tres días antes de la infección. En una prueba del modelo, los animales tratados y no tratados diferían en el peso corporal, el tiempo de supervivencia, el hematocrito, el desarrollo de parasitemia y el peso del bazo o del hígado de los ratones muertos o sacrificados recientemente.
