This chapter analyzes the relationship between a literate elite, publishers, and the printing industry in Costa Rica during the first decades of the 20th century, highlighting their influence on the production, circulation, and practice of culture and literature. Using a literary systems approach—which considers authors, works, readers, and the market within an institutional context—the chapter argues that traditional Costa Rican historiography has not addressed these factors comprehensively. The study focuses on a literate elite active between 1900 and 1925, linked to publishing projects, especially cultural journals, whose cooperative dynamics partially fueled the printing industry.
