Cambio climático, transformaciones en la línea costera y turismo de sol y playa en la costa pacífico-norte costarricense

Abstract

Las playas constituyen un espacio social y económico de mucha importancia, local y nacionalmente, en países como Costa Rica. Son lugares de acceso libre para el esparcimiento y generan oportunidades de negocio con turistas e inversionistas nacionales y extranjeros. Pero con el auge turístico mundial, y sobre todo con el crecimiento de la función turística de las playas debido a sus virtudes, se consolidaron dinámicas sociales y económicas que, además de beneficios, han traído problemas a los entornos costeros de alta atracción de visitantes. Allí, los modelos de desarrollo turístico de sol y playa han acelerado los impactos ecológicos, sociales y económicos debido a la aglomeración de personas en áreas costeras reducidas. El cambio climático ha venido a agravar la situación. Este modifica la forma en que se desarrolla la actividad turística de sol y playa e, incluso, puede aumentar la competencia entre, por un lado, los usos que pretende realizar la industria turística sobre la playa y, por otro, los usos de los pobladores locales, lo que también conduce a transformaciones morfológicas y ecológicas de la línea costera ( aumento de la erosión, achicamiento de playas). En consideración de todo lo anterior, a continuación se procurará identificar y explorar algunas de las interacciones dadas en los espacios turísticos de sol y playa entre el cambio climático y la dinámica comercial, social y cultural que ocurre en ellos...

Beaches are a very important social and economic space, locally and nationally, in countries like Costa Rica. They are places of free access for recreation and generate business opportunities with tourists and national and foreign investors. But with the global tourism boom, and especially with the growth of the tourist function of beaches due to their virtues, social and economic dynamics were consolidated that, in addition to benefits, have brought problems to coastal environments of high attraction of visitors. There, sun and beach tourism development models have accelerated ecological, social and economic impacts due to the agglomeration of people in small coastal areas. Climate change has aggravated the situation. It modifies the way in which sun and beach tourism is developed and may even increase competition between, on the one hand, the uses that the tourism industry intends to make of the beach and, on the other hand, the uses of local inhabitants, which also leads to morphological and ecological transformations of the coastline (increased erosion, shrinking of beaches).
