Renovar o morir: el nuevo pacto de las zonas francas

Abstract

Durante casi cuatro décadas, el régimen de zonas francas ha sido el motor silencioso del desarrollo costarricense. Gracias a él, el país diversificó sus exportaciones, atrajo inversión extranjera y construyó una reputación global en ser vicios, dispositivos médicos y tecnología. Sin embargo, ese éxito llegó a su punto de madurez. Hoy la pregunta no es si el modelo funcionó, sino cómo debe reinventarse para seguir siendo un instrumento de bienestar en un mundo transformado por la automatización, la geopolítica y las nuevas demandas sociales.

For nearly four decades, the free trade zone regime has been the silent engine of Costa Rican development. Thanks to it, the country diversified its exports, attracted foreign investment, and built a global reputation in services, medical devices, and technology. However, that success has reached its peak. Today, the question is not whether the model worked, but how it should be reinvented to remain an instrument of well-being in a world transformed by automation, geopolitics, and new social demands.
