Propuesta metodológica para cuantificar y compensar los servicios agroecosistémicos generados por buenas prácticas agropecuarias campesinas

Abstract

Un manejo diversificado y menos intensivo de los sistemas agropecuarios produce servicios agroecosistémicos que con frecuencia no son estimados ni compensados en los países en desarrollo. El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue crear una herramienta que permita cuantificar los servicios agroecosistémicos (SAgro) generados en fincas agroforestales campesinas, y adicionalmente estimar sus valores de compensación. A partir de una prueba inicial en el año 2013 en 10 fincas, se realiza una importante revisión bibliográfica, la consulta a expertos, y la evaluación luego en el año 2015 de 50 fincas a nivel nacional, la mayoría miembros de la Unión Nacional Agroforestal (UNAFOR) de Costa Rica. Como resultado se desarrolló una herramienta que permite medir en el campo de manera ágil, flexible y económica, los servicios ecosistémicos generados por buenas prácticas agrícolas producidas por pequeños productores (campesinos) tanto para su sistema agrícola como el sistema forestal. Encontramos además que el tamaño de las fincas no necesariamente es el factor determinante para la producción de servicios agroecosistémicos, sino el tipo de prácticas de manejo e inversiones realizadas. En este proceso se estimó que con una compensación promedio de US$ 271.6 por hectárea agropecuaria por año se podría incentivar la producción o el mantenimiento de servicios agroecosistémicos a través de buenas prácticas agrícolas

Diversified and less intensive management of agricultural systems produces agroecosystem services that are often neither estimated nor compensated in developing countries. The main objective of this work was to create a tool that allows quantifying the agroecosystem services (SAgro) generated in peasant agroforestry farms, and additionally estimate their compensation values. Starting from an initial test in 2013 on 10 farms, an important bibliographic review was carried out, consultation with experts, and the evaluation later in 2015 of 50 farms nationwide, most of them members of the National Agroforestry Union ( UNAFOR) of Costa Rica. As a result, a tool was developed that allows the ecosystem services generated by good agricultural practices produced by small producers (peasants) to be measured in the field in an agile, flexible and economical way, both for their agricultural system and the forestry system. We also found that the size of the farms is not necessarily the determining factor for the production of agroecosystem services, but rather the type of management practices and investments made. In this process, it was estimated that with an average compensation of US$271.6 per agricultural hectare per year, the production or maintenance of agroecosystem services could be encouraged through good agricultural practices.
