Agricultura y sostenibilidad ambiental en Costa Rica

Abstract

Esta investigación da seguimiento al desempeño del sector agropecuario desde la perspectiva ambiental en 2018. En el año bajo estudio se mantuvieron las tendencias tanto en el uso como en la gestión del suelo agropecuario: concentración del territorio en cultivos agroindustriales y frutas frescas, reducción del área sembrada de granos básicos, alto consumo de plaguicidas, una baja proporción del territorio dedicado a actividades orgánicas certificadas y avances modestos en los esfuerzos por alcanzar la sostenibilidad ambiental. La respuesta para atender estos y otros desafíos es limitada y lenta. Mientras tanto aumenta la conflictividad, persisten las dificultades para coordinar acciones y alcanzar acuerdos, y fundamentalmente las posiciones encontradas con relación al problema de fondo y en cuanto al enfoque desde el cual debe abordarse. Todo lo anterior pone en evidencia la urgencia de tomar decisiones bajo criterios técnicos, con base en información actualizada y veraz, y con la participación de todos los actores.

This research follows up on the performance of the agricultural sector from an environmental perspective in 2018. In the year under study, trends in both agricultural land use and management were maintained: concentration of territory in agro-industrial crops and fresh fruits, reduction in the area planted to basic grains, high pesticide consumption, a low proportion of territory dedicated to certified organic activities, and modest progress in efforts to achieve environmental sustainability. The response to address these and other challenges is limited and slow. Meanwhile, conflicts are increasing, difficulties persist in coordinating actions and reaching agreements, and, fundamentally, there are conflicting positions regarding the underlying problem and the approach from which it should be tackled. All of the above highlights the urgency of making decisions under technical criteria, based on updated and accurate information, and with the participation of all stakeholders.
