El aporte de los afrodescendientes al paisaje cultural de la costa caribe costarricense

Abstract

Un actor fundamental en la construcción del paisaje cultural de la costa Caribe costarricense es la población afrodescendiente que procede de seres esclavizados en tiempos coloniales y quines migraron desde el Caribe ístmico e insular. Debido a lo anterior, en este trabajo surge el interés de determinar las rutas migratorias que utiliza la comunidad afrodescendiente para trasladarse al territorio caribeño de Costa Rica. Como resultado, se obtiene que en el Caribe Norte existe un fuerte dominio afronicaragüense y afrocolombiano, mientras que en el Caribe Sur sobresale la influencia afrojamaiquina y la afropanameña. En conjunto, estas poblaciones son responsables de generar una impronta en el paisaje caribeño costarricense que aún pasa desapercibido en la sociedad costarricense. Por esto, también se investiga sobre algunos aportes realizados por los afrodescendientes, como las características presentes en las viviendas y el uso de plantas como medicina preventiva y su relación con las comidas tradicionales. El método que permite recoger este tipo de información para su análisis posterior es la aplicación de la entrevista a informantes clave en cada área de estudio: Barra del Colorado, Tortuguero, Cahuita y Manzanillo. Con el fin último de contribuir al proceso de reconocimiento de los aportes culturales de las personas afrodescendientes y de retribuir a su legado con el abordaje desde la rama de la geografía cultural.

A key factor in the shaping of the cultural landscape of the Costa Rican Caribbean Coast is the Afro-descendant population, that comes from enslaved people in colonial times, and who migrated from the Isthmic and Insular Caribbean. Thus, in this work we have keen interest in stablishing the migratory routes used by the Afro-descendant community to move to the Caribbean territory of Costa Rica. The results obtained show that the Northern Caribbean is strongly influenced by Afro-Nicaraguan and Afro-Colombian, while the Southern Caribbean has a greater dominance of the Afro-Jamaican and Afro-Panamanian. Altogether, these populations are responsible for making a mark on the Costa Rican Caribbean landscape that still goes unnoticed in Costa Rican society. For this reason, some contributions made by Afro-descendants, such as the influence in some features in home building, the use of plants as preventive medicine, as well as their relationship with traditional foods, are also investigated in this project. The method that allows this type of information to be collected for subsequent analysis is the application of the interviews, applied to key informants in each area of study: Barra del Colorado, Tortuguero, Cahuita and Manzanillo. The ultimate goal of this work is contributing to the process of recognizing the cultural contributions of African-descent peeople, and of giving back to their legacy with a cultural geography approach.
