Geografía rural latinoamericana: temas de investigación y perspectivas de futuro

Abstract

En Latinoamérica los espacios rural es predominantemente agrícolas, pasaron a constituirse en espacios multifuncionales, la agricultura actividad fundamental para identificarlos, se integra y combina con otras actividades del medio, como turismo, agronegocios, agroindustrias rurales y servicios. En esta transformación dichos espacios se reconoce la diversificación de la estructura productiva, la integración funcional entre lo rural y lo urbano, a través de las actividades recreativas y de residencia, transformaciones en los estilos de vida y valores tradicionalmente asociados con lo rural. Los servicios asociados a actividades de turismo revalorizan estas áreas y los recursos naturales contenidos en ellas. La modernización y la industrialización de la agricultura evidencian un espacio rural en constante transformación, con una creciente prevalencia de los complejos agroindustriales y los agronegocios, marcado por las actividades no agrícolas, y la pluriactividad, así como las nuevas relaciones entre el campo y la ciudad; la agricultura familiar en este nuevo escenario debe sobrevivir y ajustarse a las nuevas condiciones del medio. La diversidad de sujetos sociales, que dan identidad a este espacio como grandes propietarios, asalariados, pequeños propietarios, parceleros, trabajadores ocasionales, trabajadores sin tierra, caracterizan estos espacios.In Latin America, rural areas which were once predominantly agricultural have evolved into multifunctional spaces. Agriculture, the key activity that defines them, is now integrated and combined with other local activities, such as tourism, agribusiness, rural agro-industries, and services. This transformation is characterized by the diversification of the productive structure, functional integration between rural and urban areas through recreational and residential activities, and changes in lifestyles and values traditionally associated with rural life. Services related to tourism enhance the value of these areas and their natural resources. The modernization and industrialization of agriculture reveal a rural landscape in constant transformation, with a growing prevalence of agro-industrial complexes and agribusinesses, marked by non-agricultural activities and multiple sources of income, as well as new relationships between the countryside and the city; in this new scenario, family farming must survive and adapt to the new conditions of the environment. These areas are characterized by a diversity of social actors including large landowners, wage earners, small landowners, smallholders, casual laborers, and landless workers who give this space its identity.
