Six kinds of aldehydes in air samples were found during April-June 2015 in Monteverde Biological Reserve (RBM) and in the city of Heredia, Costa Rica. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propanal, butanal, hexanal, and heptanal were trapped by means of adsorption cartridges coated with a solution of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNFH) and analyzed using HPLC with an ultraviolet/visible detector. Average concentrations of each aldehyde in Heredia were between 12.78 ug/m3 and 72.57 ug/m3 during the dry season vs 7.95 ug/m3 and 62.30 ug/m3 during the transition to the rainy season; while in the RBM were measured concentrations between 1.93 ug/m3 and 22.62 ug/m3 during the dry season and between 0.26 mg/m3 and 4.68 ug/m3 during the transition to the rainy season. The total con centration of carbonyls in Heredia was 241.08 ug/m3 in the dry season vs 172.95 ug/m3 during the transition to the rainy season, due to the pollutants dilution effect of the rain and a higher photochemical activity in the dry season than in the transition to the rainy season. The total concentration of carbonyls in RBM was 42.07 ug/m3 in the dry season and 13.47 ug/m3 during the transition to the rainy season.
