Resumen
El cantón de Matina tiene muchos tesoros naturales y cultu rales, y también es el municipio que exporta la mayor can tidad de banano en Costa Rica. A pesar de los beneficios económicos que esta producción aporta a la comunidad, como fuente de empleo, algunos estudios realizados por la Universidad Nacional, así como observaciones hechas por los pobladores, relacionan la liberación de residuos de pla guicidas al ambiente con efectos en los ecosistemas, siendo las mortandades masivas de peces el efecto más evidente y preocupante. Por otro lado, estudios realizados en personas (madres y sus hijos) de comunidades cercanas a plantaciones de banano han demostrado que están expuestas a conta minación con plaguicidas y que la exposición a algunas de esas sustancias puede afectar aspectos del desarrollo de los niños, según comunicado durante el 2017, a distintos ac tores sociales mediante los oficios UNA-IRET-OFIC-572-2017, UNA-IRET-OFIC-690-2017, UNA-IRET-OFIC-730-2017, ANE XO UNA-IRET-OFIC-690-2017 y UNA-IRET-OFIC-730-2017.
The canton of Matina boasts many natural and cultural treasures, and it is also the municipality that exports the largest quantity of bananas in Costa Rica. Despite the economic benefits this production brings to the community, such as employment, studies conducted by the National University, as well as observations made by residents, link the release of pesticide residues into the environment to effects on ecosystems, with mass fish kills being the most evident and worrisome consequence. On the other hand, studies carried out on people (mothers and their children) from communities near banana plantations have shown that they are exposed to pesticide contamination and that exposure to some of these substances can affect aspects of children's development, according to a statement made during 2017 to various social actors through the letters UNA-IRET-OFIC-572-2017, UNA-IRET-OFIC-690-2017, UNA-IRET-OFIC-730-2017, ANNEX UNA-IRET-OFIC-690-2017 and UNA-IRET-OFIC-730-2017.
