Historiografía costarricense: balance de un decenio y reflexión prospectiva

Abstract

Reflexionar colectivamente sobre nuestro quehacer profesional en el campo de la investigación histórica es un ejercicio indispensable para orientar nuestro trabajo futuro tomando en cuenta su desarrollo anterior y su adecuación a las necesidades actuales y previsibles de nuestra sociedad. Cuando los organizadores de este seminario me solicitaron realizar un balance general de los estudios históricos costarricenses durante los últimos años, entendí que sin ser más autorizado que otros colegas para efectuarlo, podía ayudar a tender un puente entre el ciclo de mesas redondas historiográficas organizado en 1995 por el curso “Problemas, estrategias y fuentes de la historiografía costarricense” y la presente iniciativa. Por otra parte, parecía útil retomar algunas cuestiones apenas esbozadas en aquella oportunidad y contextualizar las evaluaciones de áreas temáticas específicas que se efectuarían durante este encuentro. Al contrastar procesos y problemáticas que comenzaron a vislumbrarse a mediados de la década anterior con el desarrollo más reciente de los estudios históricos en el país, quizás podamos identificar con mayor claridad algunas tendencias y rupturas, valorar la cobertura alcanzada y los vacíos persistentes, destacar fortalezas y reconocer debilidades, explicitar más las grandes interrogantes que han guiado nuestra labor en diversas áreas y formular otras nuevas con sentido prospectivo

Reflect collectively on our work professional in the field of historical research It is an essential exercise to guide our future work taking into account its previous development and its adaptation to the current and foreseeable needs of our society. When the organizers of this seminar asked me to make a general assessment of the historical studies Costa Ricans during the last years, I understood that without being more authorized than other colleagues to carry it out, he could help build a bridge between the cycle of round tables historiographical studies organized in 1995 by the course “Problems, strategies and sources of Costa Rican historiography” and the present initiative. On the other hand, it seemed useful to return some issues barely outlined at that time and contextualize the evaluations of specific thematic areas that would be carried out during this meeting. By contrasting processes and problems that began to emerge in the middle of the previous decade with the development most recent historical studies in the country, perhaps we can more clearly identify some trends and ruptures, assess the coverage achieved and persistent gaps, highlight strengths and recognize weaknesses, make more explicit the big questions that have guided our work in various areas and formulate new ones with meaning prospective.
