Científicos de la Universidad Nacional (UNA), en conjunto con un especialista del Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal de Costa Rica (Senasa), desarrollaron un procedimiento pionero en el mundo denominado: Aturdimiento efectivo al primer disparo en búfalos de agua, con el fin de disminuir el estrés, angustia y dolor de estos animales a la hora del sacrificio. Dicho estudio, publicado en enero de 2023 por la revista científica Animals del Instituto Multidisciplinario de Publicaciones Digitales (MDPI, por sus siglas en inglés), estuvo a cargo de los médicos veterinarios: Gustavo Araya, del Senasa; Valeria Molnar, Lohendy Muñoz y Juan José Romero, así como especialistas en bienestar animal, salud pública e inocuidad alimentaria y epidemiología, de la Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria de la UNA.
Scientists from the National University (UNA), together with a specialist from the National Animal Health Service of Costa Rica (Senasa), developed a pioneer procedure in the world called: Effective stunning at the first shot in water buffaloes, in order to reduce stress, distress and pain of these animals at the time of slaughter. The study, published in January 2023 by the scientific journal Animals of the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), was conducted by veterinarians Gustavo Araya, from Senasa; Valeria Molnar, Lohendy Muñoz and Juan José Romero, as well as specialists in animal welfare, public health and food safety and epidemiology, from the UNA School of Veterinary Medicine.
