The following work is the result of a research carried out with women who had gone through the disease of cervical cancer. An attempt was made to give a sociological and gender perspective to the topic, since there is little research in the country from these perspectives. The research was done with qualitative methodology and the information was collected through semi-structured interviews. Information was also collected from health personnel, family members of the women and participants from organizations interested in improving the quality of life and treatment of people with this disease. The gender perspective was the transversal focus of the entire document and was used to analyze the information and construct the conclusions and recommendations. The research is of an exploratory nature because the work seeks to discover ideas and aspects that can be studied in depth in future works. The research problem was to determine the existential meanings and situations that women diagnosed and treated for cervical cancer have about this disease. The women interviewed were from the provinces of San José, Alajuela and Heredia. All of them were of Costa Rican nationality, except one of them, who is Nicaraguan. The research shows that the issue of cancer is very complicated and becomes even more complex when it intersects with the particularities of being a cervical cancer, which is caused by a sexually transmitted infection, such as human papilloma. This sexual nature of the disease means that its approach must take these particularities into account.
