This essay explores the works and thought of Emilia Prieto Tugores (1902–1986) as recorded in selected xylographs and essays published in Joaquín García Monge’s Repertorio Americano. Our analysis identifies irony and poetics as key elements in aesthetic and political terms of the creative discourse in her work, and they are linked to her political activism and ideas, as well as a feminist critique of clerical, military, colonialist, and imperialist structures in Costa Rica beginning in the 1930s.
