The Interdisciplinary Academic Program of the Northern Huetar and Caribbean Region was created in response to the need of these regions for greater opportunities to promote sustainable human development. The National University then becomes a promoter of development and a protagonist among all the social actors of these regions that seek to improve the living conditions of all its population, either by articulating with state institutions and working with communities in projects that seek solutions to the various existing problems, or by training human resources at all levels and areas required. From Campus Sarapiqui, the National University directs its work towards those less favored sectors of Costa Rican society and takes in this program the opportunity to expand its frontiers. The decision to open a university campus in this area of the country is based on a rigorous analysis that includes criteria based on strategic information and linkage actions that allowed it to know the needs and conditions of the immediate area of influence, in order to establish a series of relevant and quality academic initiatives for the region.
