Medicina interna y cirugía de tejidos blandos en caninos y felinos en la Clínica Innovavet, Heredia, Costa Rica; y Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres de la Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica.

Abstract

Se realizó una pasantía de 320 horas, repartidas equitativamente entre el Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres (HEMS), ubicado en la Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria en el Campus Benjamín Núñez, Lagunilla, Heredia, y la Clínica Veterinaria Innovavet (CIn), ubicada en el distrito central de Heredia. Esto con la finalidad de fortalecer las destrezas en el área de medicina interna y cirugía de tejidos blandos. Durante la pasantía se atendieron 178 pacientes en consultas de medicina interna, de los cuales 165 (92.6%) fueron caninos y 13 (7.3%) fueron felinos. En ambos centros el principal motivo de consulta fueron problemas gastrointestinales (28%), seguido de ortopedia (13.4%) y medicina preventiva (9.5%). Se participó en la realización e interpretación de 101 pruebas complementarias. Se realizaron 37 ultrasonidos, 32 radiografías y 24 hemogramas y químicas sanguíneas, entre otros. Se realizaron 60 procedimientos quirúrgicos en 54 pacientes, los cuales fueron 49 caninos y cinco felinos. El sistema más comúnmente intervenido en el HEMS fue el tegumentario, abarcando un 24.1% de las cirugías realizas en ese centro, mientras que el más común en la CIn fue el reproductivo (55.1%).

A 320-hour internship was carried out, divided equally between the Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres (HEMS), located in the Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria inside the Campus Benjamín Núñez, in the Lagunilla campus in Heredia, and the Clínica Veterinaria Innovavet (CIn), located in the central district of Heredia. This is in order to strengthen skills in the area of internal medicine and soft tissue surgery. During the internship, 178 patients were treated in internal medicine consultations, of which 165 (92.6%) were canines and 13 (7.3%) were felines. In both centers, the main reason for consultation were gastrointestinal problems (28%), followed by orthopedics (13.4%) and preventive medicine (9.5%). The intern participated in the performance and interpretation of 101 complimentary tests, 37 ultrasounds, 32 x-rays, and 24 complete blood counts and blood chemistries, among others, were performed. 60 surgical procedures were performed on 54 patients, which were 49 canines and five felines. The most commonly intervened system in HEMS was integumentary covering 24.1% of the surgeries performed in that center, while the most common in CIn was reproductive (55.1%).
