Since 2001, a GPS observation project has been carried out on the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Costa Rica is located on the western margin of the Caribbean plate, and the Cocos plate is subducting under the Caribbean plate from the Mesoamerican Trench. The speed of convergence between the two plates has caused large earthquakes on the west coast of Costa Rica.
