The year 2020 marks the centenary of the first mass convention of Africans and people of African descent gathered in Madison Square Garden in New York on August 31, 1920. This convention showed the Western world the organizational strength of a group of people considered inferior within the Eurocentric construct and the postcolonial world of 20th century America. The convention was organized by Jamaican leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr., and the UNIA organization which spanned the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa and Australia. The main objective of this article is to show the affiliates of UNIA in Costa Rica to determine the impact of the philosophy and leadership of Marcus Garvey in the Afro-Costa Rican community of the 20th century. For this exploratory research, 47 copies of The Searchlight newspaper between 1929 and 1930 found in the national library of Costa Rica were reviewed and analyzed. The second objective is to contribute to the declaration of the International Decade for People of African Descent under the theme Afro-descendants: recognition, justice and development 2014-2024, with research focused on the Afro-Costa Rican community.
