Debido a la extensión de los tramos inundados y al aumento de producción que ocurre durante la inundación, los tramos de tierras bajas dan lugar a pesquerías excepcionalmente ricas (Welcomme, 1980). Cuando los peces están en movimiento activo en el sistema, durante la época de creciente o cuando las aguas comienzan a bajar, se prefieren métodos pasivos de pesca como anzuelos y palangres, mientras que los métodos activos son más comunes durante el estiaje; cuando los peces mismos están relativamente inactivos. Entre estos métodos activos se incluye el uso de redes de enmalle y artes de arrastre pequeños (Welcomme, 1980).The ecology of many lowland, flatland rivers is driven by a flood regime and by the organisms in the system, including fish, that are highly adapted to these seasonal events. Due to the extent of the flooded reaches and the increased production that occurs during flooding, the lowland reaches give rise to exceptionally rich fisheries (Welcomme, 1980). When the fish are in active movement in the system, during the flood season or when the waters begin to recede, passive fishing methods such as hooks and longlines are preferred, while active methods are more common during the dry season; when the fish themselves are relatively inactive.
