Para tal fin, se utilizan especies pertenecientes al género Penaeus, siendo este importante por su alto valor nutritivo y comercial. (Primavera, 1985) Para poder cumplir este objetivo es necesario que la actividad tenga asegurada la materia prima. Son dos las posibles fuentes de abastecimientos de larva de camarón: su captura en el medio natural, sujeta a variaciones cíclicas y la reproducción controlada en el laboratorio.Costa Rica, due to its geographical position, enjoys the influence of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, this has allowed to start a new industry, that of marine shrimp farming.
