Aunque la presencia de esta alga parda no es rara en la costa Caribe del país, no se había registrado tal magnitud de material arribado. La localidad de Puerto Viejo fue la más afectada, llegando a acumularse hasta 676,34 m3 de material (384,91 m3 húmedo y 291,43 m3 seco) en 100 m de playa. La llegada masiva de sargazo al Gran Caribe afecta ya la economía local de diferentes comunidades costeras en países como México. En Costa Rica el arribo masivo de sargazo es un evento reciente, pero que, de mantenerse, afectará ambiental y socioeconómicamente la costa caribe del país. Es necesario la articulación de instituciones y sociedad civil para el monitoreo y la alerta temprana de futuros eventos.On early March 2022 there was a massive pelagic sargassum (Sargassum sp.) arrival at different beaches in the southern Caribbean of Costa Rica. Although the presence of this brown algae is not rare on the Caribbean coast of the country, the magnitude of the accumulated material was never registered before. The Puerto Viejo beach was the most affected area, accumulating up to 676.34 m3 of wet and dry material (384.91 m3 and 291.43 m3 respectively) in 100 m of beach. The massive arrival of sargassum in the Greater Caribbean is already affecting the economy of different coastal communities in several countries such as Mexico. In Costa Rica, sargassum arrival is a recent event that would affect environmentally and socioeconomically it’s Caribbean Coast.
