Con respecto al grupo de los mamíferos, Rodríguez y Chinchilla (1996) han reportado 223 especies de mamíferos terrestres, quienes como componentes del ecosistema cumplen funciones esenciales para mantener el equilibrio ecológico. En costa Rica, al igual que en el resto del mundo, la Clase Mammalia, se ha visto seriamente afectada por diferentes actividades antropogénicas. Las poblaciones de pequeños y grandes mamíferos silvestres, están sujetas a presiones extremas ocasionadas por la cacería y la destrucción de su hábitat, y por lo tanto las interacciones entre sí o con otros grupos faunísticos se han visto interrumpidas o distorsionadas (Janzen y Wilson 1991).Costa Rica, due to its international and interoceanic position in a tropical zone, has life zones and plant associations that give rise to great biological diversity. In Costa Rica, as in the rest of the world, the Mammalia Class has been seriously affected by different anthropogenic activities.
