Samples collected at 40 sites were analysed for respirable suspended particles (RSP, d50 <3.5 μm), ultraviolet RSP (UV-RSP) as a marker for environmental tobacco smoke, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nicotine. Levels of RSP were very high at several sites, varying within the ranges of 34-421 μg/m3 in restaurants, 21-242 μg/m3 in hospitals and 13-196 μg/m3 in offices. Carbon monoxide levels were also high at several sites with peak concentrations reaching 29, 20, and 19 ppm, respectively, in an office, a hospital and a restaurant. Infiltration and penetration of outdoor pollutants into the indoor environment occurred at all sites studied.Durante 1993 y 1994 se midieron los niveles de sustancias gaseosas y particuladas presentes en el aire interior de lugares no industriales en Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua y Panamá, incluyendo oficinas, hospitales y restaurantes. Se analizaron muestras recolectadas en 40 lugares para determinar la presencia de partículas respirables en suspensión (RSP, d50 <3,5 μm), RSP ultravioleta (UV-RSP) como marcador del humo de tabaco ambiental, monóxido de carbono, dióxido de carbono y nicotina. Los niveles de RSP fueron muy altos en varios lugares, variando entre 34 y 421 μg/m³ en restaurantes, entre 21 y 242 μg/m³ en hospitales y entre 13 y 196 μg/m³ en oficinas. Los niveles de monóxido de carbono también fueron altos en varios lugares, con concentraciones máximas que alcanzaron 29, 20 y 19 ppm, respectivamente, en una oficina, un hospital y un restaurante.
